How It Works

Lasers target the hair follicle without damaging the skin's surface. Generated heat energy is directed into the follicle, destroying it so the hair cannot grow back. Each treatment removes a percentage of hair until the skin eventually become smooth and hair free permanently.

Hair Types and Skin Color

Laser hair removal can be performed on people with nearly all skin tones. Hair color is the most important factor when determining a course of treatment. The light from the laser is attracted to the melanin (darker pigment) in the hair follicle, which means dark hair is the most effectively treated. However, adjustments are made to ensure that those with lighter hair colors (red, blonde and gray) can achieve effective results.

Treatment length & number

Laser sessions vary depending on the part of the body being targeted. They can range from a few minutes to a couple of hours. The number of sessions will depend on the type of hair being removed and the rate of hair growth for that particular part of the body. Hair grows in intervals
of three cycles so there is usually a waiting period
of 4-8 weeks between sessions.

Before & After Treatment

We recommend that you stay out of the sun 4-6 weeks before a laser treatment. After a session,
most people experience only minor effects, though reaction can vary. You will need to use sunscreen during treatment and for up to 6 weeks afterwards. You should not tan areas that have been treated
for at least two weeks after a laser session.

FAQ's

What can I expect during treatment?

All treatments are performed in our office. You will be given safety eyewear to protect your eyes. A small hand piece will be used to guide the laser over the treatment areas. The laser emits a quick burst of cooling spray after each laser pulse. The length of each session depends on the area being treated. Sessions can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

Does it hurt?

There can be some discomfort. Most people describe each laser pulse as the snapping of a rubber band against the skin, but this discomfort goes away quickly. Our laser also releases a cooling spray to soothe the skin. Some people choose to apply a topical anesthetic prior to a session.

How do I prepare for a laser session?

You should avoid plucking, electrolysis and waxing for six (6) weeks prior to a session. Completely remove any hair by shaving. Your skin should be cleaned and dried. Make sure you remove all makeup, creams, oils, and skin-tanning products before a treatment. You should also avoid exposing the treatment area to the sun for 14 days prior to a session.

What should I do after a session?

You may choose to apply a cool compress or gel pack to the treated area. Don't forget to use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) after a treatment. Avoid scrubbing or rinsing the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers for several days afterwards. Ask your technician about any other precautions you should take.

Are there any side effects?

Risks are minimal, but there can be side effects. These include: redness, swelling, hyper or hypopigmentation, blistering and purpura (laser bruising). Permanent side effects are rare. If any of these conditions do develop they usually go away after a few days.

Are treatments covered by insurance?

Most insurance policies do not cover cosmetic procedures. Check with your specific insurance carrier for details.
